The Building Corporation

The Alpha Xi Delta Building Corporation of Marietta, Ohio, is the governing body that owns the Beta Xi Chapter’s sorority house located at 322 Fifth Street.  The Building Corporation ensures that the house is safe, properly maintained, and financially secure and enhances the living and learning environment of the chapter.

Incorporated in 1950, the Building Corporation purchased the chapter’s current home in 1954 from the family of George White, former U.S. Congressman (1911-1915) and Ohio’s governor from 1931-1935.  The house was built in 1855 for W.P. Skinner, the first-ever elected Washington County Sheriff.  In 1908, the house was sold to George White, who changed the look and size of the house by adding a third floor to the home to accommodate his family.  In 2021, the home was the target of arson and had to have the entire interior gutted due to fire, smoke, and water damage.  The Building Corporation has been working diligently ever since to rebuild this beautiful home and anticipates the collegiate members moving back in 2024.

It should be noted that the home is independently owned – it is not a property of, nor is it maintained by, Marietta College. The Building Corporation is separate and independent of the Beta Xi Foundation, but both organizations are committed partners with a common goal of helping the Beta Xi Chapter.

Gifts to the Building Corporation are not tax-deductible but offer the greatest flexibility in assisting with the ongoing maintenance and general expenses of the sorority house without restrictions on spending and use
